The Argentine Version of the Clintons

Or are the Clintons the American version of the Kirchners? Néstor Kirchner, Argentina's president, and his wife Cristina are both candidates for president in this year's October election. However, they won't run against each other. According to CNN.com, Néstor might choose Cristina to run in his place. Unlike Hillary Clinton, Cristina Kirchner already had a political career when her husband became president. Since laws prevent presidents from ruling for more than two consecutive terms, the Kirchners can extend their influence by being in power for more time. If Néstor and Cristina take turns being president, they can rule Argentina for sixteen years. See this story for more details.

Argentina has already had a female president. She was Isabel Perón, wife of and vice president to President Juan Perón who died in office in 1974. While many people see Latin America as a place that struggles with modernity and progress, it is sometimes more advanced with certain issues such as women's rights and women's presence in politics than us Americans.
